The cold axion populations
نویسنده
چکیده
We give a systematic discussion of the contributions to the cosmological energy density in axions from vacuum realignment, string decay and wall decay. We call these the cold axion populations because their kinetic energy per particle is at all times much less than the ambient temperature. In case there is no inflation after the Peccei-Quinn phase transition, the value of the axion mass for which axions contribute the critical energy density for closure is estimated to be of order 6 · 10 eV, with large uncertainties. It is emphasized that there are two groups of cold axions differing in velocity dispersion by a factor of order 10.

Bose-Einstein condensation of dark matter axions.
We show that cold dark matter axions thermalize and form a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). We obtain the axion state in a homogeneous and isotropic universe, and derive the equations governing small axion perturbations. Because they form a BEC, axions differ from ordinary cold dark matter in the nonlinear regime of structure formation and upon entering the horizon. Axion BEC provides a mechanis...

More than 80% of the matter content in the Universe is now believed to be cold dark matter (CDM) according to precision cosmological measurements [1]. However, the CDM composition is beyond the standard model of particle physics, and thus is still unknown to date. One of the most compelling candidates for CDM is the axion [2] provided its mass is above 1 μeV [3] and below 3 meV [4]. The axion i...
متن کاملFine-tuning favors mixed axion/axino cold dark matter over neutralinos in the minimal supergravity model
Over almost all of minimal supergravity (mSUGRA or CMSSM) model parameter space, there is a large overabundance of neutralino cold dark matter (CDM). We find that the regions of mSUGRA parameter space which match the measured abundance of CDM in the universe are highly fine-tuned, unless tanβ is very large. If instead we invoke the Peccei-Quinn-Weinberg-Wilczek solution to the strong CP problem...
متن کاملQuantum Fluctuations of Axions
We study the time evolution of the quantum fluctuations of the axion field for both the QCD axion as well as axions arising in the context of supergravity and string theories. We explicitly keep track not only of the coherently oscillating zero momentum mode of the axion but also of the higher non-zero momentum modes using the full axion potential. The full axion potential makes possible two ki...
متن کاملAxion Searches
The strong CP problem and its resolution through the existence of an axion are briefly reviewed. The constraints on the axion from accelerator searches, from the evolution of red giants and from supernova SN1987a combine to require ma < 3 · 10 −3 eV, where ma is the axion mass. On the other hand, the constraint that axions do not overclose the universe implies ma > ∼ 10 eV. If ma ∼ 10 −5 eV, ax...
